Indonesian Fair Trade Jewelry Artisans
This small fair trade jewelry organisation works with more than 40 different artisan groups who create a variety of handicrafts including artisan jewellery. Their artisan jewellery reflects a wide range of traditional Indonesia designs.
This fair trade jewelry organisation supports the artisans with design, technical assistance, administration and marketing. They work with the artisans to assist in improving working conditions and to generate awareness about the environment.
As with all fair trade organisations, this fair trade group works directly with the jewelry artisans ensuring that they receive fair pay and work in a good working environment. In addition to fair pay and training the jewelry artisans also receive 50% advance payment for their jewelry, interest free loans and assistance with acquiring equipment for their workshops.
One of the main concerns of this fair trade jewelry organisation is the trend of young people leaving their villages in search of job opportunities. This fair trade jewelry organisation works with these young people to teach them traditional Indonesian jewelry techniques. This training and the resulting sale of their jewelry art work means that the young people do not need to leave their villages for work. It also means that they are contributing to preserving traditional jewelry techniques that might otherwise be lost. In addition to young people a high percentage of the jewelry artisans are women.
This fair trade organisation also supports an orphanage in Java (another Indonesian island) and is also a member of the Bali International Women’s Organisation. The unemployment rate in Indonesia is very high and as a result this fair trade organisation provides assistance to families who are unable to pay school tuition fees. In particular there is an awareness that girls are most likely to be among the first to drop out of school and this organisation works hard to reduce this tendency.
A significant percentage of the people in Bali, Lombok and other Eastern parts of Indonesia are not only involved in the creation of jewelry craft and other handicrafts but also dependent upon the sale of these jewelry crafts as their primary source of income.
Pangea Collection is proud to support this fair trade jewelry organisation and we believe that you will love the beautiful jewelry craftsmanship that can be found in their work which includes, wood bracelets, fashion bangles, silver band rings with traditional Balinese design, shell rings and more.
