Artisan Jewellery
What is Artisan Jewellery (jewelry)? And why buy artisan jewellery?
In order to define the phrase "artisan jewellery", let's explore the definition of the two words, "artisan" and "jewellery" (also jewelry).
Artisan
The word "artisan" is derived from the Italian word artigiano.
An artisan is a skilled manual worker who crafts/hand makes items with decorative and/or functional characteristics. Artisan produced goods can include categories such as furniture, clothing, jewellery (also jewelry), household items, tools and food products.
Producing goods by hand and using hand tools results in each product having individual and unique characteristics. This hand crafting approach differs greatly from mass production in which the goods are produced primarily by machine resulting in products without any notable differences or unique characteristics.
Jewellery - Jewelry
"Jewellery" also spelled as "jewelry" (American English) is an adornment item worn by an individual. Jewellery items can include necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, brooches etc. Jewellery pieces can be crafted using a variety of materials including metals and stones either precious (gold, silver, diamonds, rubies etc), semi-precious (quartz, turquoise etc.) and non-precious (copper, brass, rhinestones etc.). Jewellery materials can also be a variety of other natural and manmade materials from seeds, grass, leather to resin/plastic to any material the artisan can imagine creating into a piece of adornment.
Artisan Jewellery
"Artisan jewellery" therefore is a piece of personal adornment made from any number of potential materials hand crafted by a skilled worker resulting in a piece jewellery (necklace, bracelet, earring, rings etc) with unique characteristics.
Why buy artisan jewellery rather than mass produced jewelry? Since each person is unique with individual characteristics, why then not also adorn oneself with unique, individual jewellery pieces? In purchasing artisan jewellery one also aids in preserving traditional crafting techniques which might otherwise be lost due to more cost efficient, although less personal machine production.
