Mexican Silver Jewelry Artisans - Taxco Designer Silver Jewelry
As a silver mining town, Taxco was put on the map in the 16th century after the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs. Its reputation for fine silver quickly spread as far as Europe. In the early 20th century the town developed a new reputation as a source of masterful silver artisan jewelry design, largely due to the arrival of American entrepreneur William Spratling.
Mr. Spratling instituted an apprentice system to train silversmiths and provide them with an opportunity to develop their skills. soon the exquisite beauty and craftsmanship of the designs emerging from Taxco were recognised around the world. Gradually more and more artisans founded their own workshops, and the work of these early artisans continues to inspire a new generation. Today there are hundreds of silversmiths in the town and this collection of handmade silver jewelry features work by some of the best of them.
